Pavement Sleepers

Many a time I have turned a blind eye to the pavement sleepers in India. I used to think the advanced socities like Australia did not have anybody who would be sleeping on pavements on cold and wintry nights as well. But of late, I am seeing a lot of pavement sleepers in Melbourne as well. So much for advanced societies. One person was sleeping in front of the doors of a famous dept store just because some warm air would sneak out of the doors. And I used to see lots of young girls asking people for some money especially on weekend nights. They would be very well dressed and it makes me wonder what makes them ask for money.

Tale of Two Comedians

Bob Hope of Hollywood and Johnny Walker of Bollywood, both who died within two days of each other. Bob Hope was considered the comedic ambassador of Hollywood and needless to say, Badruddin Jamaluddin Qazi, rechristened as Johnny Walker by Guru Dutt. Both these comedians reached pinnacle status in their stage lives. Two of a kind, hard to be replaced.

A Timeless Song

I was listening to 'Kaatrinile Varum Geetham' by MS Subbulakshmi from the movie Meera, that was released in the year 1945. I was unaware of the song until the movie Jaathi Malli starring Mukesh and Khusboo directed by K. Balachander some years back. In this movie, the song by MS would be played for two or three times depending on the hero's mood. I liked the song very much, and since then have become a great fan of MS, for the carnatic songs as well. Those of you interested to listen to this song, head off to MusicIndiaOnline.com and click 'Meera'. A song worth downloading as well, but I am unable to find any sources for this song.

Wow !!. It is a good product. I am happy that I found it atleast now.

Feeling Nostalgic

I am listening to the song 'Vaa Vennilla' by SPB and Janaki in the movie - Mella Thirandathu Kathavu starring Mohan and the ever gorgeous Amala. My friends Vivek and Anulekha of my undergraduate days at Coimbatore Institute of Tech., used to sing this song very often and it took me back to those days, nearly eight years back. Maha should be remembering that very often. In fact, Vivek used to imitate SPB in all the emotions in the song and Anu followed that up with Janaki's voice as well. Those were happy and carefree days.

Courses this Semester

I guess I would be taking Machine Learning, Neural Computation, a Directed study for Genetic Algorithms and Web Technologies. I dont think I would be changing this order unless somebody confuses me more.

Chandru's Birthday celebration

The birthday party was very good. We had bought him a cake and gifted him a DVD player that plays DVDs (!!), MP3, WMA, ACD, CD-R, Picture CDs.. We purchased that for A$100. A cool buy I should say. Fellow was very impressed with that. I am happy for him.

Very funny jokes

The Prime Minister of China called President Bush to console him after the attack on the Pentagon:
I'm sorry to hear about the attack. It is a very big tragedy. But in case you are missing any documents from the Pentagon, we have copies of everything."

Musharraf calls Bush on 11th Sept:

Musharraf: Mr President, I would like to express my condolences to you. It is a real tragedy.
So many people, such great bldgs... I would like to ensure that we had nothing in connection with that...It was not us.....

Bush: What buildings? What people??

Musharraf: Oh, and what time is it in America now?

Bush: It's eight in the morning.

Musharraf: Oops...Will call back in an hour!

Hillary Clinton died and went to heaven. As she stood in front of St.Peter at the Pearly Gates, she saw a huge wall of clocks behind him.

She asked, "What are all those clocks?"

St. Peter answered, "Those are Lie-Clocks. Everyone on Earth has a Lie-Clock. Every time you lie, the hands on your clock will move."

Oh," said Hillary, "who's clock is that?" "That's Mother Teresa's. The hands have never moved indicating that she never told a lie."

"Whose clock is that?"

"That's Abraham Lincoln's clock. The hands have only moved twice, telling us that Abe only told 2 lies in his entire life."

Hillary asked, "Where's Bill's clock?" "Bill's clock is in my office. I'm using it as a ceiling fan."

Vajpayee and Bush are sitting in a bar.

A guy walks in and asks the barman, "Isn't that Bush and Vajpayee?"

The barman says "Yep, that's them."

So the guy walks over and says, "Hello, what are you guys doing?" And Bush says, "We're planning world war 3"

And the guy says, "Really? What's going to happen?" And Vajpayee says, "Well, we're going to kill 14 million Pakistanis and
one bicycle repairman."

And the guy exclaimed, "A bicycle repairman?!!!"

Vajpayee turns to Bush and says, "See, I told you no-one would worry about the 14 million Pakistanis!"

With MU-CSA

I have volunteered for the post of General Internal Columnist at the Melbourne Uni Computer Science Association. I hope to improve on my writing skills in the CS category. So far I was just content on writing about abstract topics, now a chance to write about issues in Computer Science has come my way. Let us see how it goes. I hope to do well, with my knowledge in CS (however minimal that might be), and with my flair for writing as well. Of course, it will look good on my CV.

Mann Vasaanai

It is raining in Melbourne for the last two days. It would rain for another day too. It is good to see rains in any place, but there is something dreadfully missing out here, atleast to me. If this had been India, the rains would have brought out the earthy smell - Mann Vaasanai. Oh, what an experience !!.

Maha's Blog

My friend, Mahadevan, has mentioned about my latest photos in his blog, he has gone further to check out my dept's site and found out some interesting stuff. Some of our mutual friends always used to complain about his depths of involvement in each aspect of life, but now this very quality can help him out a lot in gaining knowledge.

Remembering Sivaji Ganesan

Two years ago this day, the great thespian Sivaji Ganesan passed away for ailing for sometime. Who can forget this great actor, performing unforgetable characters like Kattabomman, Karnan, dad and two sons in Deiva Magan, a village chief in Thevar Magan and so on... It might have been two years since he died, but his performances are still lingering in my thoughts.

Home Theater

Who can make a home theater with a 14 inch TV and a sub woofer with satellite speakers ? My roomates - Chandru and Ilavenil can !!. They have managed to combine the TV and the speaker system with excellent results. The F1 race at Silverstone was too good with this setup. We also have portable MP3 players, and now it is all the songs with home theater effect. I am very happy.

F1 race at Silverstone

It was a race of sorts - Barrichello taking pole, Schumi in fifth position. Barri going to third place in the first lap, a man invading the track in the midway of the race. Because of this, the strategies of all the racing teams were changed. In the end, Barri managed to be the winner and Schumi is still the championship leader.

Four seasons in Melbourne

When I landed in Melb, it was the end of summer, when the sun was visible till 8 pm. It was a real good view. Then, autumn set in and leaves started falling down. Winter then came, and now you find trees are totally bare. I am really looking forward to Spring, when all these trees would be in full bloom. Right now, I can see the night time skyline of Melb from my living room. During spring, this would be blocked, i guess. A visual treat.

Almanac

For those of you who are space history lovers, today is an important day. Today is the anniversary of the day that Apollo 11 was launced from Kennedy Space Center in 1969 carrying the man from Wapokoneta - Neil Armstrong, Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin and Micheal Collins.

Also, on this same day in 1994, fragments of the comet Shoemaker Levy 9 started hitting Jupiter.

An Awesome Visit

I had been to Chadstone - the biggest supermarket in the Southern Hemisphere, which is located on the Princes Highway. It was full of shops for clothes, toys, books, music and almost everything. It took me and my friend Arun, a full three hours just to walk around the place.

Lazy

I am feeling very lazy nowadays, the mind is willing to do things and explore further and further, but the flesh is not willing. I wish I can get over this. To add to the confusion, my roomate has bought a car and whatever little amounts of walking I used to do, have been done away with. Of course, I can always say I will walk, but my roomates get late because of me. So that also is done away with.

New Batch of Students

Time Flies fast. I am wondering that where was the time - suddenly I am the senior' group, the next set of students have started finding their way into Melbourne Univs. I met one guy last night who will be studying at Swinburne Univ, it just seems that I had my enrollment just now, and now it is the juniors coming in. My next semester (in fact the last one) will be starting on July 28.

In the meantime, I have passed in my exams held through last month. Phew !!

Movie Marathon

It was a Movie Marathon last night. Three movies in a single night - Transporter starring Louis Letterier and Corey Yuen. A simple movie, but the way that the hero drives a BMW around is simply too good. Watch the movie on a DVD and you are assured of the sound quality and the clarity of the picture.

The second one is Die Another Day, would you believe that this is the first time I am watching the movie.

The last one is Cast Away, the unforgettable Oscar nominee starring Tom Hanks and Helen Hunt and directed by Robert Zemeckis. I can watch Cast Away any number of times.

My Friend's Intimidating Experience

My housemate, Vimal has gone back to India for the semester break. I had taken him for buying the tickets. Everything was settled and he was about to board the plane when the Immigration official told him that he had overstayed illegally in the country for more than four months. The reason was that in the work visa stamp (that is stamped after arriving in Melb), the date of expiry was wrongly printed as Apr 03. In fact, it should have been Apr 04. Vimal showed the previous visa stamp on which it was said as expiring in Apr 04. But since the previous stamp was labeled inoperative, the Visa official said that she could not take any decision because it was inoperative.

Then, Vimal told them that he would goto the Immigration Office to change it, then the Visa Official said that if he gets out of the airport he would be put in a detention center. I could get all this information because he called me on the cellphone. I then rushed to the University authorities to inform about the problem and then after nearly 3 hrs of chaos, he finally took the flight.

The main point is that he can return to India, but he could not comeback to Australia, as he had illegally overstayed, whereas all of this was just a typo mistake.

Call center operators in India beware !!. According to the latest Federal Trade Commission (FTC) ruling, citizens of USA can enrol for a number which is a do-not-call number and if any sales pitch is made to them, then the company stands liable for nearly USD 11,000. People are signing up for this service by the thousands, currently it has reached 12.5 million.

I have finished my report in record time. Wait till the marks come and I will know how much it was worth. Heading off to the library for borrowing some fiction books to read. Gotta go to Engg library for returning some long over due books.

I cannot understand what I am supposed to do. Thought of coming in early today and now it is 12:30 pm (because of the cold climate of Melb) I woke up late. I have to submit it tomorrow. Somebody help me !! One thing is for sure, after reading the safety report, makes me wonder if I would ever get inside plane hereafter. I have to visit India only by means of a Kalla Thoni (boat).
